Hurricane Milton Preparedness for Cape Coral and Lee County Residents
As Hurricane Milton approaches, it’s vital to stay informed and ready, especially if you lose power or internet access. Here’s how you can stay up to date and safe as the storm intensifies:
1. Fire Station Updates
🛑 Each fire station in Cape Coral will have signs posted outside to provide critical information during the hurricane. If power and cell service go out, head to your nearest fire station for updates about Hurricane Milton and other emergency instructions.
2. Radio Updates
📻 Tune into B 103.9 FM using a hand-crank or battery-powered radio for daily updates from the City of Cape Coral and Lee County officials during the storm.
3. AlertLee Notifications
📱 Before the storm hits, make sure you sign up for AlertLee, a local emergency alert system that sends vital updates directly to your phone. You can register on the Lee County website to ensure you receive evacuation orders, shelter openings, and weather advisories.
4. NOAA Weather Radios
NOAA Weather Radios provide round-the-clock weather reports. Be sure to tune in to the following frequencies and have your FIPS codes ready:
- Fort Myers Channel 4: 162.475 MHz
- Lee County FIPS: 012071
- Collier County FIPS: 012021
- Desoto County FIPS: 012027
- Charlotte County FIPS: 012015
- Hendry County FIPS: 012051
5. WGCU-90.1 FM
WGCU-90.1 FM is the Southwest Florida affiliate of the Florida Public Radio Emergency Network. They will broadcast up-to-the-minute information before, during, and after Hurricane Milton, even during power outages. Be sure to keep a battery-operated radio handy to access this critical station.
6. Evacuation Shelters
Lee County has opened six additional shelters for residents in Evacuation Zones A and B, as well as for those living in mobile or manufactured homes. Shelters will continue to operate throughout the storm. Transportation to shelters is available via LeeTran, and all shelters are pet-friendly (pets must be leashed or in kennels).
Currently open shelters include:
- Dunbar High School, 3800 Edison Ave., Fort Myers
- Estero Recreation Center, 9200 Corkscrew Palms Blvd., Estero
- Island Coast High School, 2125 DeNavarra Parkway, Cape Coral
- Gateway High School, 13820 Griffin Drive, Fort Myers
- Hertz Arena, 11000 Everblades Parkway, Estero
- Oak Hammock Middle School, 5321 Tice St., Fort Myers
- Tortuga Preserve Elementary School, 1711 Gunnery Road N., Lehigh Acres
- Treeline Elementary School, 10900 Treeline Ave., Fort Myers
- Varsity Lakes Middle School, 801 Gunnery Road N., Lehigh Acres
New shelters as of Tuesday include:
- Alico Arena at FGCU
- East Lee County High School
- Harns Marsh Elementary School
- Harns Marsh Middle School
